Tech Insider: WiMAX — Ready for Prime Time
"On Demand"
This promises to be the breakout year for WiMAX. Web browsing at speeds much faster than Wi-Fi with a range designed to extend up to 30 miles that will keep you permanently connected to the Internet — anywhere — will continue to drive the development and geographic coverage of WiMAX.
Analysts are already projecting 54 million WiMAX subscribers by 2012, with most of the growth driven by emerging markets, and most of those will accommodate mobile access. At least a third of the market will use WiMAX as a fixed-access technology. Look for WiMAX to begin showing up as an adapter card in laptops to provide extended range for Wi-Fi at broadband speeds. Wireless carriers, network equipment manufacturers, and chip makers are already making WiMAX products.
Issues to be discussed by WiMAX industry specialists include:
- How WiMAX will compete with other technologies, including 3G
- Where key players stand on integrating WiMAX into their existing strategies
- How WiMAX will reshape the mobile Internet of the future
- What role WiMAX will play in the development of mobile content delivery
- How soon we can expect to see WiMAX built into TVs, TiVos, notebook PCs and smart phones
