Atomic Autonomy: With the inauguration of a centrifuge plant for uranium enrichment [center], in Resende, near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has now mastered all industrial stages of nuclear fuel production, from mining and processing of uranium ore into a concentrate known as yellowcake [top and left] to the fabrication of uranium dioxide pellets [far right] used to fill large metal assemblies [right] that form the core of a nuclear reactor.
