Holding back the sea: According to UK officials, the barrier on the River Thames must be enlarged or supplanted to handle the higher tides that will come as the world warms. In this rendering, we show how a gate looks in both the raised and lowered positions; the photo [bottom] shows the entire raised barrier. Cylindrical actuators move rocker arms, which rotate the panels through 90 degrees.
