Elevator Ahoy: The space elevator would be anchored to Earth by a floating platform, located on the equator several hundred kilometers west of the Galapagos Islands. The platform would also house lasers used to power the elevator cars. Its mobility would allow the elevator cable to be moved out of the way of orbiting objects.
